What is therapy?

I believe therapy holds different meaning for different people. For some, it is a time for self- care, the time to be alone with yourself without any distraction. For others, it is the last resort when all other avenues of support and assistance have been exhausted. Of course, there is the whole range in between.

Therapy means different things to different practitioners as well. To me, therapy possesses the opportunity to be many things, but here I will focus on the ones I find to be most important. To me, it is a relationship that provides a safe and confidential space to engage in empathic, positive, and congruent interactions. It is client-centered; I am certain that my clients innately know what is best for themselves. The client takes an active, autonomous role in therapy, and I, the role of facilitator. As Carl Rogers stated so eloquently, “It is that the individual has within himself or herself vast resources for self- understanding, or altering his or her self-concept, attitudes and self-directed behavior - and that these resources can be tapped if only a definable climate of facilitative psychological attitudes can be provided" (1980, p.115-117).

I truly stand by this. We all have strengths and resources within us- the question remains, can we access them? As your therapist, I will tell you that, as a team, we most certainly can.

Remember, life is about being and becoming. “The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination” (Carl Rogers).
